Das Baby lernt von allein. Es braucht unsere Unterstützung nicht (eine Kränkung, die wir uns nicht nur, weil sie keine ist, verbieten müssen: sie würde uns in die Irre führen). Folgt unser Baby einem Plan? Fast scheint es so (unsere Pläne kommen uns, verglichen mit seinem einen, konfus vor). Wenn wir denken, es könnte dies oder das noch nicht, ist es am augenfälligsten (wenn unsere Augen auf der Höhe ihrer Fähigkeiten sehen): es kann nur, was es kann. Was es nicht kann, lernt es von allein.

The baby learns by himself. He does not need our assistance (a slight we refuse to countenance, not only because it is not a slight but because it would lead us astray). Is our baby following a plan? It almost seems that way (our plans, compared to his single plan, seem confused). When we think, he could do this but not yet that, it becomes most obvious (when our eyes are at the  height of their capacity): He can only do what he can. What he can’t do, he learns by himself.
