So kommt es uns vor (als wir die Füße des Babys kurz in den kühlen See eintauchen): ohne Bedürfnisse würden wir zugrunde gehen. Ihr Nichterfüllung allein genügt dafür nicht. Mit der Nichterfüllung kann man leben. Aber ohne etwas zu wollen nicht. Warum sonst sind wir auf die Welt gekommen, wenn dahinter nicht das Bedürfnis nach Geburt steckte? (Und während das Baby sich von uns halten lässt, spüren wir die Hände, die schon so lange nach uns greifen.)

This is how it seems to us (as we briefly dip the baby’s feet into the cool lake): Without needs we would perish. Their non-fulfillment alone would not be sufficient for that. One can live without having one’s needs fulfilled. But not without wanting something. Why did we come into the world if not to fulfill a need to be born? (And while the baby allows itself to be held by us, we feel the hands that have been reaching for us for so long.)
